What is AI, Really?
Artificial Intelligence is probably the most misunderstood term in tech right now. When most people hear “AI,” they imagine either sentient robots or some magical black box that thinks like humans. The reality is both simpler and more interesting.
AI, at its core, is software designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. That’s it. But here’s the thing—what counts as “human intelligence” is surprisingly broad. Reading handwritten digits is human intelligence. Understanding the sentiment in a customer review is human intelligence. Recommending the next song you’ll like is human intelligence.
When I’m building AI-powered apps at AI Box, I’m usually working with systems that are trained to recognize patterns in data and make predictions or decisions based on those patterns. Machine Learning is a subset of AI where the system learns from data rather than being explicitly programmed. Instead of hand-coding rules, you feed the system training data, and it figures out the patterns. Spam filters have evolved from “if contains word ‘viagra’, mark as spam” to systems trained on millions of actual emails.
Deep Learning is a subset of machine learning using neural networks with multiple layers (hence “deep”). This is what powers modern large language models like GPT-4 and Claude. All of these work because they’re solving specific, well-defined problems with lots of available training data.
How AI Systems Actually Work
Most modern AI follows this basic pipeline, and understanding it changes how you think about AI’s capabilities and limitations:
1. Training Data Collection — You gather a dataset. For a spam filter, thousands of legitimate and spam emails. For an image recognition system, millions of labeled images. The quality and quantity of this data matters enormously.
2. Feature Engineering or Representation Learning — The system determines what aspects of the data matter. A spam filter might identify that certain words, sender patterns, or formatting choices are signals. Modern deep learning does much of this automatically.
3. Training — The system learns patterns from the training data. It makes predictions, checks if they’re right, and adjusts internal parameters to do better next time. This happens millions of times across millions of data points.
4. Evaluation — You test the trained model on new data it hasn’t seen before (called the test set). If it performs well, great. If not, you might need more training data, different features, or a different approach entirely.
5. Deployment and Monitoring — You release the model into the world. But here’s the thing—it only performs as well as the new data resembles the training data. If you train on 2024 data and deploy in 2026, the world might have changed.

What AI Can’t Do (Yet)
This is important. AI systems are powerful within their scope but limited outside it. Understanding these limits prevents disappointment:
AI can’t actually understand: GPT-4 can write compelling essays about philosophy, but it doesn’t understand philosophy the way a human does. It’s pattern matching at an incredibly sophisticated level. This matters because it can sound authoritative while being completely wrong.
AI can’t reason about things outside its training: If you ask GPT-4 about events after its training cutoff, it won’t know. If you ask it about proprietary internal systems it’s never encountered, it will hallucinate.
AI is only as good as its training data: If your training data is biased, your AI will be biased. If your training data is limited, your AI will struggle with edge cases. Garbage in, garbage out—this rule hasn’t changed.
AI requires tons of compute: Training modern large language models costs millions of dollars. This is why most companies use existing models rather than training their own. It’s economically nonsensical to train GPT-4 from scratch when you can use it for a few cents per query.
AI makes mistakes confidently: This is scary. An AI system can generate a completely fabricated answer with the same confidence as a correct one. Users can’t tell the difference by looking at it. That’s why human review is crucial for anything that matters.
Building AI Products Without Code
Here’s where my perspective as someone actually building AI products comes in handy. The barrier to building with AI has dropped dramatically.
